Socio‑economic status of fishermen and wetland characteristics in northern Bangladesh

Öz

Wetlands in Bangladesh are crucial for aquatic biodiversity and small-scale fisheries, yet they are increasingly vulnerable due to declining fisheries resources and socio-economic challenges affecting dependent communities. This study aimed to document the livelihood conditions of fishing communities with the physical features, biodiversity, and resource-use characteristics of two important fisheries-dependent wetlands in northern Bangladesh: Choroi Beel (Rajshahi) and Singhimari Beel (Nilphamari). A mixed-methods approach was employed, including household surveys (n = 57), focus group discussions, key informant interviews, and field observations. Findings revealed significant socio-economic hardship among fishermen, characterized by low literacy levels, high school dropout rates among children, and low daily incomes, with 67% of fishermen at each site earning USD 3.31–4.96 per day. While electricity and safe drinking water coverage were universal (100%), Singhimari Beel exhibited higher overall living standards than Choroi Beel, featuring superior housing conditions and better sanitation. The survey recorded 38 fish species (dominated by Cyprinidae) and 17 aquatic plant species, while highlighting local declines in key native species including Tor tor, Labeo nandina, and Ompok pabda due to overexploitation and habitat degradation. The wetlands provided distinct ecosystem services, with Choroi Beel functioning as a fish migration route and sanctuary, and Singhimari Beel supporting aquatic habitats and water transport. Enhancing community resilience and preserving aquatic biodiversity will require targeted interventions, including livelihood diversification, educational support, and community-based wetland management.
