The gravity model in seafood trade: The case of Norway and Türkiye

Abstract

This study examines the determinants of seafood exports from Türkiye and Norway for the period 2005-2024 using a panel gravity model. The study uses the GDP of both importing and exporting countries, the distance between the countries, the quantity of seafood production, the real exchange rate index, and whether the importing country is an EU member as determinants of trade. To represent a broad market, the 20 countries with the highest net import volume in world seafood trade (HS-03) were selected as importing countries. The findings indicate that both the income of the exporting country and the income of the importing country positively affect trade for both countries. The real exchange rate was found to be a significant determinant for both countries. It was concluded that a country's EU membership negatively impacts Türkiye's exports while positively impacting Norway's exports. Furthermore, the findings suggest that Türkiye has additional export potential in several importing markets, whereas Norway’s actual exports are already close to or above the model-predicted levels in many major destinations.
