The genus Granulina (Mollusca: Gastropoda: Neogastropoda) from the Turkish coasts with taxonomical notes on some Mediterranean species

Abstract


In the present study four Granulina species  we recognized from the Turkish coasts: G. marginata (Bivona, 1832), G. occulta (Monterosato, 1869), G. boucheti Gofas, 1992 and G. melitensis Smriglio, Mariottini & Rufini, 1998. The high variability of the shell morphology is studied and  « morphologic affinities » are comparatively analized, and two different complex of species are here recognised : the G. marginata/G. boucheti  complex and the G. occulta/G. melitensis complex. Meanwhile, with our records the number of the species known from the research area has been increased to four with the addtion of G. boucheti and G. melitensis. The name Granulina guttula La Perna, 1999 is restored, being considered as not preoccuped by Erato guttula Sowerby, 1832. Granulina gubbiolii Smriglio & Mariottini, 1999 is here recognised as a junior synonym of Granulina minusculina (Locard, 1897).

We are indebted to Kemal Geyran (Istanbul, Turkey) for the loan of 4 lots of Granulina shells from the Mediterranean coast of Turkey, to Dr Rafael La Perna (University of Bari) for the loan of 6 lots of G. melitensis from off southeastern Sicily, and to Dr Salvatore Giacobbe (University of Messina) for the loan of several lots from the surrounds of the Strait of Messina. Jacques Pelorce (Le Grau-du-Roi, France) and Attilio Pagli (Empoli, Italy) kindly loaned their collection of Granulina species in the frame of this study. Dr Carlo Smriglio (University Roma 3) gave a specimen of the Tyrrhenian population of G. melitensis (Plate 4 Figs M, N) and kindly authorized the reproduction of pictures displayed in his published works. Dr Andrea Di Giulio (University of Roma 3, Laboratorio Interdipartimentale di Microscopia Elettronica) kindly authorized the reproduction of SEM photos he performed in the frame of the Smriglio & Mariottini’s work from 2013 [figs 9 a-c and figs 1 a-b used herein as Plate 3 Figs E-G (syntype of Gibberulina occulta) and Plate 3 Figs L, M (holotype of Granulina mediterranea)]. Ennio Squizzato kindly authorized the reproduction of photos of a specimen of G. cf. minusculina from Isole Egadi (Plate 4 Figs E-G). Joop Trausel and Frans Slieker kindly helped with photographies of specimens from the Rotterdam Museum (NMR), herein as Plate 1 Figs G-H, Plate 2 Figs C, D, Plate 3 Figs J, K, Plate 3 Figs N, O, Plate 4 Figs C, D and Plate 4 Figs O, P. Manuel Caballer (MNHN) performed the photos of type specimens for G. marginata (Plate 1 Figs A, B), G. boucheti (Plate 2 Figs A, B), G. occulta (Plate 3 Figs A, B), G. parvulina (Plate 3 Figs C, D) and G. minusculina (Plate 4 Figs A, B) in the frame of the program E-RECOLNAT (ARN-11-INBS-0004). A part of the specimens investigated within the study were sampled in the frame of the project 104Y065 supported by TUBITAK.
