Growth rate of different size groups of mussels, Mytilus galloprovincialis Lamarck, 1819 in Iskele-Urla (Bay of Izmir)

The culture of different size groups (six) of the mussel seeds were investigated from August, 1996 to July 1997 in Iskele (Urla-Izmir). Shell length, width, height and live weight of different size of mussels were monitored during one year. The experimental results indicated that the growth rates of the mussel seeds which were separated according to their shell length at the beginning of the investigation were different. Results showed that small mussel seeds, had higher growth rate than bigger size (P<0.05).  

Farklı boylardaki midye gruplarının (6 grup) Ağustos 1996’dan Temmuz 1997’ye kadar İskele’de (Urla-Izmir) kültürü araştırılmıştır. Farklı boylardaki midyelerin kabuk boyu, eni, kalınlığı ve canlı ağırlığı bir yıl boyunca takip edilmiştir. Deneysel sonuçlar araştırmanın başında kabuk boylarına göre ayrılan midye yavrularının büyüme oranlarında farklılıklar olduğunu göstermiştir. Küçük midyelerin büyük midyelere göre daha hızlı büyüme oranına sahip olduğu saptanmıştır (P<0.05).
