Study on amount of carbon and inflammable materials and several heavy metal (Cu, Pb, Zn, Fe) levels in sediments of Çandarlı Bay (Aegean Sea)
Abstract
Çandarlı Bay is effected by domestic and industrial wastes. Therefore, this study is designed to determine the amounts of several heavy metals such as iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), lead (Pb) and copper (Cu) and to implement inflammable material and organic carbon analyzes in sediment samples of Çandarlı Bay. Heavy metal concentrations were determined using by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (Varian, Model Spectra AA, 220 FS). 2 samplings (October 2003 and June 2004) were carried out at a total of 8 stations with an interval of 8 months. The results of analyzes on this two sets of samples revealed no significant changes in time for the heavy metal concentrations. As a consequence, heavy metal concentrations were found to be as follows: Cu: 2.05-28.7 (μg g-1 dry weight); Pb: 2-35.5 (μg g-1 dry weight); Zn: 63.22-104.5 (μg g-1 dry weight); Fe 12139-30345 (μg g-1 dry weight). According to the sediment quality guidelines (SQG), Fe, Cu and Pb was found to be over low effect level (LEL) whereas Zn was below it. Amount of inflammable material was detected to be 3.53-16.14 (%) whereas the amount of carbon was observed to range between 0.13-1.36 (%). Significant correlations were seen between Cu, Pb, Zn, Fe concentrations and the amount (%) of inflammable material. The distributions of heavy metal, inflammable material and carbon levels indicate that the wastewater discharges to the bay and the river are considerably effective.
