An overview on İzmir Bay physical oceanography

Abstract

Physical Oceanography studies in İzmir Bay have been regularly carried out since 1988. In this study, February and July 2011 data which representing the winter and summer seasons were analyzed. In terms of the physical variables -sea water temperature, salinity and density distribution, a homogeneous vertical water column was found during the winter period in the Bay, and a two-layer structure in the summer period. Temperature difference between the surface and the bottom is 10°C, and the thermocline depth reaches to 20 m. Types of water existing in the Bay are Aegean Sea Water (ASW), Izmir Bay Water (IBW), Izmir Inner Bay Water (IBIW) and Levantine Intermediate Water (LIW) with salinity 39 psu detected in 2011 T-S diagram. In the İzmir Bay, the prevailing wind directions are north and southeast in winter, and north in summer. By using KILLWORTH Ocean General Circulation Model (OGCM) with the prevailing wind directions, the seasonal flow patterns have been found. After comparison the model results in case of southeast and in case of north wind, it is found that the direction of evolving recirculation patterns change sign in the Bay.
