Carassius (Cyprinidae, Pisces) species in inland waters of Western and Middle Anatolia, Southern Marmara, Thrace and Western Black Sea Regions and their distributions.
Abstract
It was aimed to determine of the species belonging to Carassius genus distributes in inland waters of Western Anatolia and Thrace regions and their distributions. It was known that, Carassius genus has been confusedly introduced to lakes, ponds and reservoirs together with mirror and common carps by various production stations of DSI and Ministry of Agriculture for 10 – 15 years. Some problems occur on the distribution of Carassius genus in inland waters of our country. In order to solve these problems, certain measurable and countable characters, which have important roles in systematic discrimination of the Carassius genus, of the samples collected from 18 localities were investigated. As a consequence, it was observed that the number of gill spines is one of the basic diagnostic characters. Other measurable and countable characters showed variations according to ecological features of the localities. As a result, the number of gill spines on first gill arch was approved as the basic descriptive feature and Carassius genus of the regions in question was represented by three species which were Carassius carassius, Carassius auratus and Carassius gibelio. In Pamuklu Lake, Gala Lake, Küçük Akgöl ve Taşkısığı Lake Carassius carassius; in Karın Lake Carassius auratus; in Saka Lake, Arnavut Stream, Uzungöl, Avşar Reservoir, Buldan Reservoir, Gölcük Lake, Yayla Lake and Eğirdir Lake Carassius gibelio; in Tunca River, Bulanıkdere, Işıklı Lake, Marmara Lake and Eğrigöl both Carassius auratus and Carassius gibelio were found.
