Solubility, structure and probable effects on marine environment of slag from the iron and steel works in Iskenderun

Abstract

Solubility, structure and probable effects on marine environment of slag that it is remnant from Iskenderun Iron and Steel Works examined between March and July 2005. For this purpose, the solubility of slag studied in seawater, pure water, rain water and mixture of sea and pure water. Concentration of heavy metals in seawater, sediment, seston and marine organisms investigated. While standard methods were used for the solubility experiments on the slag, AAS and GFAAS methods were used for heavy metal analyses. It has been seen that the slag did not dissolve in water under natural conditions. The results of heavy metal concentrations, within seawater, sediment, seston and marine organisms, and the slimmer probability of dissolving of the slag with rainwater in the slag store area of the Iron and Steel Works showed that the slag was not a pollution factor for İskenderun Bay from the heavy metal point of view.
