Host plant effects on the fecundity of Orius laevigatus (Fieber) (Heteroptera: Anthocoridae)

Year 2017, Volume: 8 Issue: 2, 93 - 106, 15.12.2017

Abstract

Abstract: In this study, the effect of host plant on the fecundity of the predator Orius laevigatus was investigated. Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), curly leaf parsley (Petroselinum crispum), red pepper (Capsicum annuum), lavender (Lavandula officinalis) and honeysuckle (Lonicera x purpusii) were used as host plants. They were used singly and all combined. The tests were conducted in a climate chamber at 25±5ºC and 65±5% RH, with a photoperiod of 16 L: 8 D. As an insect food, Ephestia kuehniella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) and Artemia sp eggs were used. The trial was conducted with five replications. Orius laevigatus laid eggs on curly leaf parsley (42.3%) in the single plant experiment. This was followed by pepper (29.7%) and bean (11.8%) plants. When the plants were combined, the majority of O. laevigatus laid eggs on the pepper plants (53.0%), followed by beans (31.6%) and curly leaf parsley (8.4%). When the interaction between single and multiple applications and plants was evaluated in terms of the number of eggs laid, the difference was statistically significant (F4,40 = 4.0, P = 0.0077). In conclusion, the predator preferred to lay eggs on curly leaf parsley and pepper plants.

Predatör böcek Orius laevigatus (Fieber) (Heteroptera: Anthocoridae)’un yumurtlaması üzerine konukçu bitki etkisi

Year 2017, Volume: 8 Issue: 2, 93 - 106, 15.12.2017
