Abstract

The economic growth target is one of the most important issues for countries. This target can make various positive or negative environmental effects. Therefore, economic growth models in which environmental sustainability can be achieved are important for countries. Located in a fragile geography, Türkiye is a country that always sets a high level of economic growth as target for itself and strives towards this goal. These efforts are accompanied by discussions on whether Turkey achieves a higher economic growth performance by causing various environmental damage or by being sensitive to environmental quality. In this context, the aim of our study is to investigate the relationship between environmental sustainability and economic growth in Turkey. The empirical analysis includes time series data for the period 1970-2018. Ecological footprint data were used as an indicator of environmental sustainability in the models. Urbanization and foreign direct investment data were used as control variables. As the results of the analysis show, there is a cointegrating relationship between the series in the long run. Based on the long-term coefficient estimates, economic growth and urbanization affect ecological footprint in a positive and statistically significant way. No statistically significant finding could be obtained regarding foreign direct investments.

ÇEVRESEL SÜRDÜRÜLEBİLİRLİK ÇERÇEVESİNDE EKOLOJİK AYAK İZİ VE EKONOMİK BÜYÜME İLİŞKİSİ: TÜRKİYE ÜZERİNE AMPİRİK BİR ANALİZ
