Abstract
Balkan Yarımadası'nın en ilginç; ama az bilinen milletlerinden biri de Gagauzlardır (Türkçe adı Karavuzlar). Ana dili Türkçe olan bu Türk Ortodoks Hristiyanlar, Karadeniz sahili boyunca Doğu Bulgaristan’da yerleşmişlerdir. Açıkçası eski ve yerli Hristiyan Yunan ve Slav halklarından farklıdırlar. Bulgaristan, Dobruca ve Besarabya'da Ortodoks inancına sahip bu Türk Hristiyanların bugünkü adı Gagauz'dur . Bu Gagauzların, Küçük Asya'nın iç kesimlerindeki Bizans Rumlarının bakiyeleri olan sözde Karamanlı Rumlarında ve bazı Ermenilerde olduğu gibi, Türkçeyi benimsemeleri son yüzyıllarda değildir. İreçek'e göre bu Türk Hristiyanlar, kökleri Kırım'da olan Bazarjane gibi, Türklerin Balkanlar'ı fethinden önce Orta Çağ’da Hristiyanlaştırılmış eski bir Türk boyunun kalıntılarıdır ve şüphesiz onlar Kumanların torunlarıdır

Abstract
The most interesting of the Balkan Peninsula; but one of their lesser known nations is the Gagauz (Turkish name Karavuz). These Turkish Orthodox Christians, whose mother tongue is Turkish, settled in Eastern Bulgaria along the Black Sea coast. They are obviously different from the ancient and native Christian Greek and Slavic peoples. The current name of these Turkish Christians with Orthodox faith in Bulgaria, Dobruja and Bessarabia is Gagauz. It was not in the last centuries that these Gagauzes adopted Turkish, as was the case with the so-called Karamanli Greeks and some Armenians, the remnants of the Byzantine Greeks in the interior of Asia Minor. According to İreçek, these Turkish Christians are the remnants of an ancient Turkish tribe Christianized in the Middle Ages before the Turkish conquest of the Balkans, such as Bazarjane, whose roots are in the Crimea, and they are undoubtedly descendants of the Cumans.
